Febri Azrian's Top 16 States Championship report

Its been a really long while since I updated the blog and its also partly due to me being demoralized playing this TCG dubbed luck game by some. Anyway some of you all must know that I had a horrible runs for both the Regionals as well as Cities.
Well maybe its because of my poor deck choice and constructions.
1st Regionals : Big Basics (constructed the day before) 0-3
2nd Regionals: Speed Rayeels 0-4
Cities: Dceels with no Exes 2-4

Never have I been so demoralized by a card game. Which led me to a fantastic book club, where I read and read lots of interesting books. Anyway I will be writing a brief report from what I can remember. So my deck of choice is :

Plasma Klinklang/ Cobalion

So I entered the arena feeling really moodless with not much expectations of even cutting. I was there because my friends coaxed me to join them and just be there. Also not forgetting the horrible runs at the past 3 premiere events.

Round 1 VS Jonathan Lee w Darkrai/Lasers
Great. Starting off against a strong competitor, who I believed got top 16 in the previous cities. Cant really remember much but the game was pretty much Sableye junk hunting, him catchering and poison gunning 2 of my cobalion ex which allowed him to take 4 prizes easily.
Iirc he got a t2 darkrai or something which allowed him to heavily damage my board.
I only got my klinklangs out in turn 8 or even later. From there I managed to stall for awhile and build up my field.
I KO-ed all of his sableyes and made sure that there are no more lasers. Thats when I went on the offensive.Time was called. He catchered my gear grind klinklang and max potion his other damaged darkrai to stall.
my turn, i drew into a catcher, catch his darkrai with 100dmg and gear grind for 80 and for my 2 prize. Time got called and i wont him 1-2 prize.

Round 2 VS Aim w Big Basics/Garb tech
For this game he was whiffing on energies and pokemon for the first few turns. I quickly got my cobalion ex to start attacking getting rid of his dces off mewtwos and immediately getting rid of any potential threat, trubbish. I remembered playing max potion 3 times to cancel out his boufullant's damage. and I also got a T2/T3 KK set up.
Time got called again and he couldnt catch up with my prize. He took out my last prize and I returned KO with steel bullet taking my last 2 prize.

Round 3 VS David Chang w Big Basics/Garb tech
Similar to the previous game, I got my plasma KK out really quick and getting rid of his trubbish and garbodor twice. and after a few turns later, he scooped the game as he said there isnt much else he could do as his only out,garbordor, was already in the discard pile along with his super rod.

Round 4 VS Jefferson Sim w Klinklang EX
Well after starting off with cobalion ex for 3 rounds, I guess I have to start with a Klink soon and I did. I remembered he almost got the donk until I managed to get another pokemon. I took sometime to set up my field. Somehow I felt like this was suppose to be an easy game for me since all I need to do was to clear all of his special energy and Im good to go. Sadly due to my bad start, I had to waste a lot of resources early game in order to set up. Jefferson knows what he is doing with his deck thus being able to win by catchering up my cobalion for his last 2 prize.

Round 5 VS Glenn w Cobalion EX/ Landorus EX/Laser
This game was a rather annoying one, I was actually able to donk his cobalion ex in the earlier part of the game as he was having supporter drought and has no other pokemon in play. What got me was my sleep flips. My cobalion slept for like 5 turns. Skyla for full heal, but it was prized. Had to get switch but at that point of time I only have 1 attacker. As the game progresses, I noticed he dont have anymore laser so I keep attacking and him not being able to do anything. Got rid of his cobalion exs as they are a threat.He catchered my plasma klinklang and I finished the game with it.

Round 6 VS Josiah Yeo w Darkrai lasers
In this format,1 simple misplay can cause you the whole game. The game started with me drawing badly and not being able to set up my plasma kk. I was only able to send out my shift gear one out first. because I had to juniper them away. So the game got to a point where I had to get 2 klinks in my hand and place it down to evolve it next turn. I ultra balled, search my deck and noticed that 1 is in the prize, 1 in my hand, 1 evolved to kk and other KO-ed in the discard pile. Then I realized that I have a super rod in my hand. I should have super rod and then ultra ball.
benched my lone klink and got catchered ko. There goes my game. downhill.

So after 6 swiss:

8th seed. Not too bad

Top 16 VS Pearlyn Chua w Rayquaza/Eelektrik
Round 1: I went first and got a perfect start. Being able to set up 2 KK in about T3 and started killing her eels. After I took about 4 prize or something, realizing that its strange that she didnt drop a victini to take early prizes and just when I thought that, she dropped it and ohko my cobalion ex. I responded with a cobalion NVI and she super rod it back and return KO. Energy wiped out from by board. She catchered my cobalion ex for her last prize.

Round 2:Started with cobal ex and hit her ray ex. until I got to a point where I was whiffing energies,supporters and not even a single klinklang was set up. good game.

Conclusion
Overall I got 13th place and had a rather mixed emotions. Was glad that I was able to end that horrible streak of poor runs at events but also sad that I had to meet the only rayquaza eelektrik which conveniently run a Victini :(

So thats all for my States report. Will try to write more articles if it is possible. Kinda busy with bookclubs and movie clubs. Till my next update and here is a glimpse of the next format.
